Saturday, February 13, 2010, Japanese Bookbinding, come and learn the history of how Japanese bookbinding devolved and the various styles they used. Participants will learn the traditional way to create one or two styles of bookbinding to make a journal as well as the modern way of embossing the cover of your journal. Saturday, February 20, 2010, Inkle Loom Set-Up, Band Weaving During this one session class, students will learn how to set up an inkle loom and start weaving straps, belts, camera straps, trimmings or bookmarks. An inkle loom is designed for weaving narrow projects such as the ones mentioned above. Bring your own loom, heddles (or strong string to make heddles), scissors and a shuttle. Saturday, February 20, 2010, Kumi Himo Braids Kumi Himo is the art of Japanese braiding. Learn how to make several basic braids on a maru dai with 8 bobbins. Examples of many braids will be presented as well as application of braids. Students will work on studio provided marudai kit which may be purchased after the class. Fiber used in class provided through the class fee. After this class, consider taking the "Beaded Kumi-Himo" class to add elegance to your braids.  Class from 12:30 to 2:30  p.m. at T.L.D. Saturday, March 6 & 13, 2010, Beginning Spinning Class. Learn the basics of spinning to make your own wool yarns.  The first session will cover the process of making yarn and simple techniques using drop spindles.  The second session will deal with how a spinning wheel works and learning how to spin a consistent yarn on the wheel.  Materials and equipment provided but if you have a drop spindle or a wheel you can bring them to class and learn on yours. Saturday, March 6, 2010,  Band Weaving and Pick-Up Learn how to weave straps, belts or bookmarks using a simple pick-up technique. Threading instructions will be provided ahead of time. Saturday, March 6, 2010, Beaded Kumi Himo Learn how to add sparkle to your kumi himo braids! Is it a beading technique or a "special interest" technique? We don't care... it's fabulous. These braids can serve as a lariat, hat band, rope belt, purse strap or stand alone as a necklace. Students must know how to wind a warp and how to set up a maru dai. Saturday, March 13, 2010, Spinning Review Know how to spin a basic yarn, but not sure what to do next?  This a refresher class and will teach you how to create the yarn you imagine.  Topics include spinning finer and heavier yarns, plying, woolen and worsted spinning, and a little fiber preparation.  This class is a great way to brush up your skills.  You will need a spinning wheel for this class, or borrow one from the shop.  Class from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at T.L.D. Saturday, March 20, 2010, Spindle Spinning for the Beginner, This is a great way to learn the basics of spinning to make your own yarns! Participants will learn how to process wool (washing, carding, combing). The technique of spinning (drafting, twisting and winding) will be executed on a spindle. See samples of what can be done on the loom and once your fabric is off of the loom. Sunday, July 25, 2010, Amazing Felt Hats  Walk in with an idea and walk out with a hat! This is a workshop where the students design and make their own cloche. The cloche is a close fitting hat, somewhat bell shaped, that was so popular during the roaring twenties. Recommended for those with felting experience.
